Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. September 2002.

Hundreds of thousands of Migrant workers flock at Guangzhou main train station to start their journey back home over the Chinese New Year. The air is hot and very humid inside this crowded, long distance train bound for the city of Dazhou. A young man relaxes at one of the few windows that are not broken and can be opened.

The vast majority of migrant rural workers going home are packing China’s trains in journeys that can easily last two days.
